UPS Adds 200 Hybrids to Fleet

UPS has expanded its fleet of alternative-fuel vehicles with the deployment of 200 next-generation hybrid electric delivery trucks in eight U.S. cities. The 200 new hybrid electric vehicles join roughly 20,000 low-emission and alternative-fuel vehicles already in use by UPS.

"This technology, where properly used, can yield a 35 percent fuel savings, the equivalent of 100 conventional UPS delivery vehicles," said Bob Stoffel, UPS senior vice president of supply chain, strategy, engineering and sustainability.

The 200 new HEV delivery trucks are expected to reduce fuel consumption by roughly 176,000 gallons over the course of a year compared to an equivalent number of traditional diesel trucks. The hybrids also should reduce by 1,786 metric tons the amount of CO2 gases released annually into the atmosphere.

Trucking Comprehensive Safety Analysis Still Planned for 2010

The FMCSA has been testing its new Comprehensive Safety Analysis program in pilot states. It is scheduled to be rolled out in 2010 but may be delayed beyond its planned July start for implementation of fixes found during pilot testing. "This is not going to be a program we get right from the get-go. It will certainly impact carriers and it's causing some confusion and concern today. But we are committed as an agency to work together with individual carriers, our division administrators and their staff, our law enforcement partners who have been part of the project development and our CSA 2010 team at headquarters to get it right," said Anne Ferro, administrator, FMCSA.

Strict Electronic Onboard Recorder Option Imposed by FMCSA

Starting in June 2012, trucking companies with 10 percent+ violations of hours of service rules are required to install electronic onboard recorders for two years on all trucks. FMCSA is also encouraging voluntary use of recorders. Rulemaking is expected soon on even stricter requirements to improve safety. "We are committed to cracking down on carriers and drivers who put people on our roads and highways at risk. This gives us another tool to enforce hours of service restrictions on drivers who attempt to get around the rules," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Toyota Tundra sales saw a 94 percent leap. "This is a much stronger harbinger of economic recovery than just consumers going back into the marketplace, because these buyers are employers," said Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends at automotive data firm TrueCar.

U.S., Canada Raise CAFE Standards to 35.5 MPG by 2016

The May 2009 deal with automakers has resulted in establishing federal CAFE standards of 35.5 mpg by 2016 rather than 35 mpg by 2020 as passed in the 2007 energy law. Incremental cost of technology to achieve the new standards is expected to be recouped within three years from fuel savings. "These historic new standards set ambitious, but achievable, fuel economy requirements for the automotive industry that will also encourage new and emerging technologies. We will be helping American motorists save money at the pump, while putting less pollution in the air," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Pickens Predicts Bipartisan Approval on Natural Gas Tax Credit Bill

Can the United States break its dependence on foreign oil? Although we have been trying since the late-1970s, the percentage of imported crude continues to increase. Even after the shock of $4.00 a gallon gasoline two summers ago, no progress has been made. Now, energy magnate T. Boone Pickens believes Congress is about to pass a bipartisan bill that provides a $65,000 tax credit to switch large commercial trucks from diesel to natural gas. "If we go forward without an energy plan, we will be importing 75 percent of our oil in 10 years and paying $300 a barrel," Pickens said.

Technological barriers to driverless robocars were overcome in a 2007 competition.
