The Sustainable Fleet

By Brian Matuszewski, Sustainable Strategies Manager, ARI

There is perhaps nothing more important a fleet can do to drive world-class results than to be sure the data they are collecting and using to evaluate their performance truly represents their fleet.

Data is power. That’s why companies large and small, and across every industry and in every sector are investing tremendous resources into the task of tackling Big Data. Businesses everywhere are looking for better ways to collect it, manage it, and – most important – transform it into useful, actionable information.

Fleets are no different.

The Power of Mobile Apps

By Janice Sutton

We were delighted to have the opportunity recently to talk with Brian Wright, Senior Vice President of Products and Service at Donlen Corporation, about the fleet management company’s mobile technology. In this interview, Brian tells us about the significant cost savings that fleets are enjoying as the result of putting this technology in the hands of fleet drivers.

He says, “We believe that these mobile apps and the other ways of talking to drivers in real-time and giving directions in real-time in a convenient manner is going to be the key to actualizing cost reductions versus just identifying them through the big data that takes place today.”

The Road To Self-Driving Cars: A Timeline

Joann Muller/Forbes

In the race to deliver driverless cars, it’s tough to say who’s in the lead. A number of carmakers, including Audi , Mercedes and Volvo, have introduced advanced driver-assistance systems that help motorists to be better drivers.

Tesla Motors just released a software update for its cars that adds new Autopilot features, allowing the Model S to steer within a lane, change lanes, and manage speed in traffic.

How Driverless Cars Will Radically Change Every Aspect of Our Lives

Marshall Phelps/Forbes

Good driver discounts? Accident premium hikes? These are about to go extinct, along with a good portion of auto insurance profits. Because in just three years’ time, driverless cars are going to start hitting the roads and reshaping a host of industries — not to mention all of our lives.

But before we look at how, exactly, our lives will change, let’s explore a curious feature of this radical innovation: it’s coming primarily from outside the auto industry itself.

Volvo's Electrification Strategy

Forbes

After seemingly hemming and hawing for several years, Volvo has announced its global electrification strategy. The Swedish premium automaker has read the tea leaves and decided that electrification is the way. It plans to offer a plug-in version of all cars in its vehicle line up, build smaller vehicles, and offer a pure electric vehicle by 2019.

Key to the plan will be its upcoming line of 40-series vehicles built on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which has been designed from the start with electrification in mind.

More EVs for PG&E

MarketWatch

For the hundreds of Calaveras County residents who took shelter at Burson Full Gospel Church during the height of September’s wildfire, being evacuated from their homes was uncomfortable enough. Then the church’s only generator conked out.

With no power, the makeshift emergency center’s refrigeration units stopped working. Cell phones for keeping in touch with loved ones couldn’t be recharged. And it looked as if flashlights and camping lanterns would be the only option for navigating the darkness.

That’s when a Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) exportable power truck pulled up outside. Within minutes, the truck—itself an electric vehicle—had the lights back on, the wall outlets live and the refrigerators humming. The truck stayed on site for two days, providing all the power the center needed until a replacement generator could be brought in.

Stopping Cyberattacks

The Detroit News

Two auto trade associations are forming a new working group to help prevent cyberattacks on the nation’s 230 million cars and trucks.

The group’s new effort comes as Congress has raised concerns about the security of cars after Wired magazine in July showed how a 2014 Jeep SUV could be commandeered by a hacker. The report prompted the first-ever recall for hacking worries by an automaker, covering 1.4 million vehicles.
