Safety & Risk

Driving Dynamics is excited to kick off its new Safety Risk column in Fleet Management weekly. We look forward to delivering exceptional and informative driver safety content each month.

There is probably not a day that goes by when you see someone taking unnecessary driving risks. If you are like most individuals, this can make you quite uncomfortable—maybe even angry at times. Without a doubt, aggressive driving is a serious and growing problem. It is rude, often illegal, and always dangerous. Speeding, tailgating, frequent and sudden lane changes, failure to yield right-of-way and disregarding traffic signals—these aggressive behaviors are contributing factors in more than 50 percent of all collisions.

This One Second Advantage™ safety tip addresses what triggers aggressive driving and its results. It also includes a few common sense techniques designed to keep yourself and the situation under control.

The Fleet Customer Experience

Pay attention to the pre-transaction experience. That’s the true start of the customer journey is in most customer experiences.

The Corporate Executive Board (CEB) surveyed more than 1,400 B2B customers across multiple industries, and found that 57 percent of a typical purchase decision is made before a customer talks to a supplier. You need to start engaging your customers and selling before customers enter your business. If you ignore the pre-transaction experience, you are very likely sending those prospects to your competitors.

Find out how your present and future customers begin their journey for what you are offering. That’s the true start of their customer experience. You want to be there to connect and engage them in an informative and pleasing way before the transaction.

The Commute of the Future? Ford is Working on It

The New York Times

On a brisk October day in Chicago, a few employees from the design firm Ideo left their office and headed to Knife & Tine, a restaurant about four miles away.

The goal, besides lunch, was to complete the journey within 45 minutes, on a budget of just $10 for the whole group, all while carrying bulky shopping bags.

This was not a party game, but the kind of immersive research that defines the work of Ideo, a global design firm whose clients have included Samsung, 3M, Anheuser-Busch and, on this day, Ford.

Google on Hiring Spree for Autonomous Vehicle Program

The Detroit Bureau

Google is putting out the “Help Wanted” sign, and it could signal a major shift in plans for its Google X autonomous vehicle program.

For the last several years, the high-tech firm has said it doesn’t want to produce its own vehicles but would rather find partners – a term used by Google X CEO John Krafcik during a visit to Detroit last month.

But among the dozens of jobs being advertised, at least some put a focus on manufacturing skills.

Your Next Car Could Have Airbags on the Outside

AutoBlog

Airbags keep proliferating throughout the interiors of our automobiles. What started out in the steering wheel soon multiplied to the dashboard, door panels, seat frames, window frames, knee panels, and elsewhere. The next frontier for airbag installation, however, may not be inside the vehicle, but on the outside.

Volvo became the first to install an external airbag when it fitted one between the hood and windshield on the V40, pictured above.

The device was designed to mitigate injury to a pedestrian by cushioning his or her head upon impact. As pioneering as Volvo has been, however, in implementing exterior airbags, it won’t be the last.

Smart Maps are Coming

Automotive News

You’ve doubtless heard about “smart” maps that let cars locate and communicate with other vehicles, stoplights and anything else encountered on the street.

In theory, these maps will help self-driving cars figure out what’s down the road, so the vehicles can safely plot their routes.

Although true driverless cars may be a decade away, the first smart maps likely will debut this year or next. Continental AG confirms that it has a contract to supply its eHorizon smart map to an unnamed customer for a model to be marketed in Europe, North America and Asia.

Talent Management

By Mike Cieri, MSIR, Vice President of Mardac Consultants

What are your thoughts about this statement: “We cannot be motivated by others….only influenced.”

Hmm, so many times we look to our supervisor, various leaders in the community, coaches to motivate us into action. Yet if we think about it, are they really getting us to move? Who decides whether we put in extra hours at work to meet deadlines, or go into the office when we are not feeling 100%? I do! Individually, I decide if I will put in the time or not.

I decide if the reward is worth the effort, not my supervisor, community leader, coach, or professor. I decide.

The Importance of Technology

The Car Connection

Over the past decade and a half, much of the world has changed the way that it consumes media. We download music in seconds, rather than visiting record shops. We use gadgets like Roku and apps like Sling instead of keeping pricey cable TV subscriptions. And most of us emptied our gloveboxes of service station roadmaps years ago. (Though in fairness, we stopped stowing our gloves there ages ago, too.)

At the center of all these changes sits one device: the smartphone. And according to Autotrader’s Car Tech Impact Study, the ease with which auto shoppers can pair their smartphone with a car’s infotainment system is a major factor in purchase decisions.
