Transforming Mobility Management

Until recently, some of us may have thought that dealing with powerful issues surrounding autonomous and connected vehicles, as well as creating new mobility management solutions, could arise safely past their retirement or movement to a new post. But all of these developments are proceeding very fast and accelerating at a dizzying pace.

Here at Fleet Management Weekly, we are closely tracking these developments for you. We intend to provide you with thoughtful coverage of all them, especially as they affect management of your fleet and – maybe more importantly– the mobility, safety, productivity, and satisfaction of your employees.

Accordingly, you will not want to miss Mike Sheldrick’s superb interview with Dillon Blake, Senior Director at Runzheimer: The Transformation of Mobility Management.

Mobility Management

By Mike Sheldrick

Without fear of contradiction, it can be said that the next ten years will see greater change to the automotive industry than the last fifty — or even more.

At the extreme, there will be significant numbers of autonomous vehicles. Indeed, we are witnessing several on-the-road, real-life experiments.

More generally, we have begun to think much more deeply about the issue of mobility. Individual car ownership or leasing may be in decline, and we will confront a transportation system combining conventional cars and trucks, autonomous cabs, shared rides, mass transit, and yes, even bicycles and walking.

In that vein, we recently sat down with Dillon Blake, Senior Director of Runzheimer, to talk about how many of these topics affect the age-old question of reimbursement vs. leasing as well as the recent entry of fleet management companies into reimbursement.

Who Will Control the Airwaves?

The Seattle Times

Cars that wirelessly talk to each other are finally ready for the road, creating the potential to dramatically reduce traffic deaths, improve the safety of self-driving cars and someday maybe even help solve traffic jams, automakers and government officials say.

But there’s a big catch.

The cable television and high-tech industries want to take away a large share of the radio airwaves the government dedicated for transportation in 1999, and use it instead for superfast Wi-Fi service.

Strictest and Most Lenient States on High Risk Drivers

WalletHub

The average American spends more than 18 hours in an automobile each week, which equates to over 17 percent of his or her waking hours, according to data from Nielsen and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That alone spells risk not only because the odds of an accident increase with the number of miles we drive, but also because the more time-crunched we are, the more likely we are to attempt multitasking or otherwise drive recklessly.

In addition to endangering fellow motorists, bad behavior on the road can have costly consequences for your wallet.

U.S. DOT Proposes Speed Limiters for Large Commercial Vehicles

NHTSA.gov

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced that the NHTSA and FMCSA propose equipping heavy-duty vehicles with devices that limit their speeds on U.S. roadways, and requiring those devices be set to a maximum speed.

“In addition to saving lives, the projected fuel and emissions savings make this proposal a win for safety, energy conservation, and our environment,” Foxx said.

It’s Getting Harder to Justify a Hybrid

The Detroit Bureau

If you’re picking a new car, truck or crossover based on the bottom line, you may be in for a surprise, according to a new study.

While hybrids tend to deliver better mileage than comparable gasoline-powered vehicles, you may actually wind up spending more in the long run.

Less than one out of four of the 29 hybrids covered by consulting firm Vincentric’s U.S. Hybrid Ownership study actually had lower costs than comparable gas-powered models.

Driverless Cars

The Washington Post

Two researchers say they’ve discovered a curious relationship between deadly car crashes and the jobless rate — and the finding may have important implications for next-generation vehicle technologies like self-driving cars.

Fewer people die in car crashes, it turns out, when the economy is hurting.

That’s the report from Clifford Winston, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and Vikram Maheshri, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Houston.

The Fleet CX Toolkit

By Wendy Eichenbaum

What was originally a novelty becomes the standard by which all products, services or companies are measured, even when the original implementation was not your competitor.

Balboa Park is San Diego’s Central Park. Its Prado area, filled with museums, restaurants, and landmarks, is deserted once the sun goes down. That was until July 6, 2016. Now when you arrive at the Prado at night, you may not get a close parking spot. The Prado is filled with hundreds of people playing Pokémon Go.

Over 80 million people have downloaded Pokémon Go. Why does this matter? Pokémon Go is a mash-up of technologies: GPS, mapping, camera, and social media. And it’s this combination that revolutionizes how people can interact with their apps.

VW Aims to Broaden Its Appeal

The Detroit News

Volkswagen AG is promising U.S. dealers a wider model range and lower pricing as the automaker tries to broaden its appeal and push the reset button in the world’s second-biggest car market in the wake of record fines and plunging sales.

While VW’s U.S. sales have fallen off a cliff this year, its troubles gaining traction in the market predate the scandal. Dealers have been pushing the automaker for years to extend the U.S. model offerings and build vehicles with less features that can then be priced more competitively.
